Dell Urich Golf Course at Randolph Park

The Dell Urich course is located on 600 S. Alvernon Way at Randolph Park, in the central part of the city. This location makes it accessible for people who live on the South Side and in Midtown. This par 70 local golf course is 5,270 and 6,633 yards from the front to back tees and the changing elevation changes golfers. This course offers a variety of amenities, including lighted driving ranges, separate putting greens, rental equipment, and a pro shop. The City of Tucson offers golf lessons at this park through their parks and recreation department. Course rentals cost between $15 and $50, depending on the package you resolve. For more information, call (520) 791-4161.

Silverbell Golf Course

Silverbell golf course, located at 3600 N. Silverbell Rd., sits along the Santa Cruz River and has nine lakes and has a green, spacious fairway. It is located on the northwest side of Tucson. The course consists of 18 holes on a 6,300 yard course. Unlike Randolph Park, the greens at Silverbell are primarily flat. They offer the same amenities as Randolph, including a full-service clubhouse and a pro shop. Because the course is part of the city of Tucson, the prices are the same as Randolph Park, as well. For more information, call (520) 791-5235.

El Rio Golf Course

El Rio Golf Course, located at 1400 W. Speedway Blvd, is one of the best golf courses in the city of Tucson because it has historical significance to the city. The dwelling of this course is close to golfers who live near the University of Arizona. The course opened in the 1930s, becoming the original site of the Tucson Open. The city acquired the course in 1968, allowing the public to win access to the course. This course has small fairways, with a generally flat terrain. It also has two lakes and a lot of trees, making it appealing for those hot summer days. This golf course offers the same amenities as other City of Tucson golf courses.

Golf is a wonderful game and I have spent many happy hours playing on my local golf course. But there seems to be something creeping into the game, more and more, which often spoils a round of golf for many players and that is, dead play. Golf surely should be a relaxing game, not a stressful one, but on occasion there are players that do test the patients of a saint.

In my experience, slow play is not so poor in itself, as long as you can keep moving along, it’s the lesser of the two evils, but when there are long hold ups, this in my conception is not acceptable. Having said that, I do realise that things happen on the golf course that are genuinely unavoidable, but in this instance I am talking generally.

I’m sure people do not play golf slowly intentionally, and appear to be totally unaware of what they are doing or should I say not doing. So, to benefit players honest be a little bit more aware of what they and others are doing on the golf course, I thought I would just write a few helpful golf tips on avoiding slow play and to having a more enjoyable and hopefully a more comely salvage card in the club house afterwards.

Start the day relaxed

The first tip is not really concerning plain play, but more about starting your golf day in the right way. When you get up in the morning do it slowly and then try doing everything slowly and relaxed, until you reach the first tee, this will hopefully mediate in a positive blueprint on the golf course.

Get to the golf course early

Give yourself plenty of time travelling to the golf course, its better to be waiting in the club house than waiting in a traffic jam worrying that you’re going to be tedious. There’s nothing worse for a game of golf than arriving late, then rushing around trying to catch up. This can put you in totally the scandalous frame of mind, for achieving a relaxing game and low scoring round of golf.

Getting organised when teeing off

When by the tee, perform sure that every body in your group knows, in which order they are teeing off, and be ready. Make sure you have your correct tees and ball about your person. Don’t go rummaging about in the bag for golf balls and tees when people are waiting for you to tee off. It is also a good idea to retain a couple of balls in your pocket at all times.

Playing your shot out of turn

When players in a group hit their golf balls to various parts of the golf course, unless you are playing in a competition, it might be quicker for you to take the next shot in the corrupt order of play.

Clearing the green early

If you have unprejudiced finished your putts, don’t stand around on the green talking about the putt you should have holed. Definite the green straight away then talk about it on the way to the next tee.

Take your clubs with you

If you have hit a wayward shot, don’t forget to seize your golf trolley everywhere you go, but only where it’s physically possible that is, I have been guilty of this one myself. When looking for your golf ball after hitting a poor shot there is a tendency to forget about the trolley whilst you are trying to find the ball. Then once you have found it, the realisation hits you that your clubs are some distance away, so it’s a trudge back to the trolley, bring the trolley back to the ball, select a club and take the shot. This is not good.

Being prepared to take your shot

Whilst your playing partner is taking his shot, if possible, make distinct you have already selected the club you are going to use for the next shot and you have a fare idea of where you would like it to go. It doesn’t sound worthy of a time saver but over the 18 holes and playing a four ball, it adds up.

Keep the scorecard up to date

Give yourself plenty of time to effect the scorecard; don’t leave it until it’s your turn to tee off. Try to get into a routine; otherwise you will end up asking your playing partners two or three holes further on, what they scored on the 6th, 7th and 8th hole. You will not be very well-liked.

Help your playing partners

If one of your group is having a problem in any plan, providing you have already taken your shot, go and support, rather than just standing there waiting.

Eating and drinking on the golf course

Its always a suitable idea to pick plenty of water and some snacks with you onto the golf course, but please don’t be tempted to stop and have a bite to eat when there’s a chance it might fill up play. Try to eat snacks on the go, if possible, and perhaps take a drink whilst waiting at the tee.

Carry spares and be prepared for terrible weather

Make sure, everything in the golf bag is in order and ready to use and is easy to get at, for example, water proofs, gloves, hat etc impartial in case the weather changes. You don’t want to be fumbling around in your bag, when all your friends came well prepared and organised. And they are all waiting for you to take your shot. It’s not a bad idea to carry spares such as, a golf glove, laces, pitch mark repairer, pencil or pen, plenty of balls and so on.

Letting players play through

This is an obvious one for most golfers. If your group is having problems, lost ball etc, and you anticipate a long wait, please ask the group that are playing behind you, to play through. This of course depends on whether you are in, or just behind a competition.

Hitting the golf ball straight

I know this tip is going to sound a bit cheeky, but it is really meant in the best possible way. This could help in preventing some hold ups on the golf course. When learning the game or just trying to improve. I wonder if it would be better to concentrate on hitting the ball straight, rather than trying to hit it out of sight. It’s amazing, the amount of golfers I have noticed, hitting the ball a long way, but can’t hit it straight. If you are a high handicap player, try slowing down your swing and you will keep the ball on the fairway more often, whilst the big hitters are looking for their balls in the woods.

I have noticed over the years that the vast majority of written golf instruction, especially magazines, try to teach you everything about golf, except how to hit the ball straight.

I hope the above tips are helpful and interesting.

Time to get wait on to reviewing golf clubs! I’ve received many emails thanking me for my quick to the point observations of golf equipment and I have dozens more to write in the New Year! From unusual clubs to some older Retro Reviews, stay tuned for many updates in the weeks and months to come! For more golf news and information visit MikeBabjak.Com or my Blog! Now on with the first review of 2009!

The Titleist 909 D Comp driver is really the most high tech driver that Titleist has ever created. It’s multi material design and multi piece construction provides maximum forgiveness and distance while maintaining a please shape at address. For drivers of this nature without the pleasing shape, there will be reviews of the fresh Cobra drivers later down the line!

The Titleist 909 D Comp features a high launch and low spin driver with a very high MOI. This is achieved by 3 key components to the driver:

The first is it’s composite crown, saving weight at the mid-rear of the driver’s head allows for more perimeter weighting along with more back weighting that will allow for more forgiving, higher launching drives. The second is a new, permanent, weight screw installed at the rear of the club to further lower the center of gravity and allow for proper club weight depending on the shaft model you choose. The third is a ancient spring face with a new twist. Thicker walls for stability surround a CNC Milled face insert that has milled into it, trapezoid shaped rings in the middle of the face to allow for a little more pop at impact.

The shaft is an upgrade from traditional Titleist stock shafts. A Matrix Ozik XCon-5 shaft assembled at 45″ makes this club a suited looking canon to hit the ball high and far!

My first impressions when I heard of the new driver was that it was going to be an ugly, pudgy looking thing like their last game improvement driver the 907 D1. What I saw is a very pleasing shape and while it does not have a exiguous, compact footprint by any means, it is defiantly a contemplate the purists can get over once they get a chance to hit a few balls with it! Added the fact that it is at 45″ and not longer as many companies are making their drivers theses days makes it easy to control which is another bonus.

The ball flight of this driver is what I thought it would be. I tested the 9.5* model and it took off like a rocket true off the club face. The rear weighting and slightly longer club head are to thank for this. The ball flight was very, very stable on shot to shot, even on hits I set up on the toe and heal. For what it’s worth, this is the longest Titleist driver I have ever hit and while the ability to work the ball was limited, (especially a fade) the simple fact is that given the suitable loft/ball/shaft combination you can just bomb it over most pains in your way!

Overall this is a mountainous new driver from Titleist and will help the 10+ handicap crowed out by hitting the ball higher, farther and straighter than ever before! Given the traditional shape, this club might be able to steal some game improvement driver users away from the likes of Ping, TaylorMade, etc.

I’d give this club a try if you are a Titleist fan looking for a club that will help you hit some more fairways, or for those who only thought Titleist made clubs for improper handicap players and golf pros!

Stay tuned for my reviews of the other 2 unique drivers from Titleist in 2009, as well as their new Fairway Woods and Hybrids!

How often have you looked at your scorecard and seen the numbers for the course and slope rating, only to have absolutely no clue as to what they mean? Well, you’re not alone. Most golfers don’t understand what a course rating of 74.6 really means, or a slope rating of 114. So, let’s catch a look at the true meaning behind the numbers and how it can affect your golf game.

Golf Course Rating
Here in the U.S., and really around the world, the USGA has designed a system to officially rate every individual golf course. The course rating for any golf course will usually be between 67 – 77. The lower the rating, the easier the course. The rating is calculated by scratch golfers playing the course and averaging the scores.

The USGA assigns a course rating for every set of tees on that course, so you may see up to four different sets of numbers for your home course. So, if your golf course has a course rating of 75.3 on the set of tees you play, it means that this is the average derive that scratch golfers would post. A rating of 75.3 means this is a pretty difficult golf course by the way.

Also, the USGA requires separate ratings for both men and women. So, on the forward tees you may see a men’s rating of 68.2, but a women’s rating of 71.5.

USGA Slope Rating
The USGA assigns every golf course a separate slope rating in addition to a course rating. Aslope rating is used to describe the level of difficulty for a “bogey golfer” compared to the course rating. Slope ratings are between a minimum of 55 and a maximum of 155. The golf course with an average degree of difficulty will usually have a slope rating of 113. It’s important to note that the slope rating has nothing to do with the number of strokes played like the course rating does.

Like its counterpart, the course rating, the USGA slope rating is given to each set of tees on a particular course.

So, why is it called a USGA slope rating? That’s a great question. What is funny about it, is the fact that slope has nothing to do with it.

The USGA slope rating system was added to the already existing course ratings in the early 1980’s. Slope rating was added to account for the growing disagreement in scores between players of different abilities. Think about this for a moment; you have 2 players, player 1 and player 2. Player 1 is a 5 handicap golfer and player 2 is a 20 handicap golfer. On the average golf course with a USGA slope rating of 113, they will both usually shoot scores close to their handicaps. Makes sense, but what about when they play on a more difficult golf course?

It only makes sense that as you play a more difficult golf course, player 2’s come by will increase a lot faster than player 1’s. So, on a golf course with a USGA slope rating of 140, players 2 may need an another 15 strokes, while player 1 may only need 5.

Ok, now picture how this looks on a graph. The lines on the graph would rise with both players as they play more difficult courses, but the graph rises much steeper with player 2.

The “slope” of player 2’s graph is much steeper than player 1’s and that is how the term “slope” came into being. The new USGA slope rating was based on a bogey golfers relative steeper graph line compared to a lower handicap golfer.

Arizona has long been a popular vacation destination but savvy hikers, mountain bikers and spa-goers are considering a new travel destination these days. St. George, Utah, with its dry desert conditions has a climate comparable to Arizona making it perfect for senior and family getaways and spa vacations. Located near the Utah-Arizona border and only 146 miles from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, St. George is an excellent vacation position boasting sightseeing and adventure activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. With the dry climate and accessibility of gentle hiking trails and walking paths, seniors and families of all ability levels can enjoy the region. St. George is located near the 62,000-acre Red Cliffs Desert Reserve; there are miles of hiking trails and nearly 1,500 climbing routes at 51 sites in the immediate area. Museums, excellent restaurants, spas and other activities help to create a fantastic travel package fit for any type of vacation.

Getting to St. George is easy from anywhere in the country. Just a scenic two-hour drive from Las Vegas, this vacation destination is accessible by non-stop flights from virtually every major city in the nation. The Las Vegas McCarran International Airport tends to be a busy place and retain in mind it is one hour behind St. George time. Shuttle Buses are available for around $80/person. Nearly every major car rental agency has a desk in the airport and a car allows you the flexibility for self-guided excursions on your vacation and easy access to restaurants, shopping and other activities. Salt Lake City Airport offers the same basic conveniences but is a 4-½ hour drive. You may sail directly into St. George as well. Budget, Hertz and Avis car rental agencies are available if you still choose to rent a car.

If you are planning an all-outdoor vacation, campsites are available at Snow Canyon State Park, St. George Campground, nearby Zion National Park and other locations. For more information go to www.utah.com. There are a wide variety of inns, hotels and vacation rentals in St. George along with some world class spas.

Nestled at the unfavorable of Snow Canyon, Red Mountain Spa offers the convenience and beauty that comes with proximity to such powerful red rock formations. It is these very formations that set the tone for the 7-year-old spa. With its sprawling campus of 82 rooms and 12 villa sites, it is easy to find solitude or activity depending on your needs. Its stark architecture appears nothing more than a continuation of the red rock formations surrounding the facility. Walking through the spa grounds you feel as if you could become one with the desert around you. Red Mountain Spa is wonderful for families as it has something for everyone. While some may be attracted to the adventure activities, the spa treatments can be an inspiring reward at the end of an active day. Red Mountain’s special programming designed specifically for men and teens is fairly unique in the spa travel market adding to its family-friendly atmosphere. The sheer number of treatments and activities may appear overwhelming but the conscientious staff is more than delighted to walk you through your options and attend you design a trip that suits your mood.

You may book your spa treatments and activities up to a month in advance of your pause. The earlier you book the more options you will have. Keep in mind that not every treatment or class is available every day so remain flexible in your choices. If you are a last minute-traveler, you may be able to take advantage of some of the ‘Last Minute Hot Deals’, this, however may limit your choices at the spa even more since some treatments and classes may be booked. Among some of the more accepted classes are selections from the cooking and nutrition school. With world-class chefs on hand the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are nothing if not dazzling. Unique recipes for pheasant, tenderloin, duck, salmon and buffalo are accompanied by an array of unusual fruits and vegetables as well as sensational wines and beers from around the world.

With so much going on in such a large spa facility it may be hard to feel particularly connected to your fellow visitors. The knowledgeable and helpful concierge staff is, however, very adept at making you feel immediately at home and you will never be left without something to do…unless you want to.

Green Valley Spa sits atop a vista where gentle winds blow the scent of its garden’s 10,000 roses throughout the facility. The property retains its beauty even though it has a somewhat unkempt feeling. It is clear that the modern management has yet to do the due diligence needed to maintain its 2002-2004 Spa Finder awards. The resort seems to be having some trouble redefining itself and its target clientele. It was formerly a destination resort with a weeklong minimum pause. Having altered that format the challenge of scheduling for various lengths of halt with varying arrivals and departures has clearly not been easy for them, nor have they spent the time to train their staff to handle the stress such scheduling issues can cause.

The facility is equipped with both a tennis and golf academy in addition to the spa. The accommodations for the camps, however are not the accommodations for the spa itself. The rooms for the spa are very well appointed and incredibly comfortable. The beds themselves are so comfortable they offer to get your bed at home the ‘Green Valley Spa way’ through the Green Valley Spa Gift Catalog (www.greenvalleyspashop.com). Your physical body is pampered daily with a gift of soothing body products that are made specifically for the resort. Your spiritual body is pampered with daily reflections and meditations placed on your bed each night during your turndown service. The housekeeping staff is very professional and accommodating.

The dining facility lacks ambiance and the service lacks crispness leaving the newcomer feeling a bit lost. The food is, however, fantastic and paying close attention during the spa facility tour will provide all the necessary information regarding the dining program. Snacks are available throughout the day but special arrangements may need to be made for dinner for late arrivals to the spa. Keep in mind this is a limited calorie resort. In its old incarnation it was primarily a weight loss facility and has therefore retained the low calorie menu to appease its long-time visitors. In this vein it is also a dry resort. Alcohol may be purchased in town and appropriate glassware will be supplied in the spa dining room.

The Green Valley Spa treatment facility boasts over 70 treatments and a wide range of medical testing. Scheduling can be a challenge as they will only pre-schedule treatments two weeks in advance of your stay and will not schedule anything for your day of arrival. Treatments and classes can either be scheduled a la carte or through spa vacation packages that are available for 3- or 7-night stays. Spa treatments begin after lunch at 1:00 p.m. leaving the cool of the morning free for outside excursions. A wide range of activities can be scheduled at the recreation desk including fitness hikes, exercise classes, lectures and life enrichment classes. There are several adventures that are offered by outside companies for an additional fee but can be booked through the resort. These include excursions to Zion National Park, rock climbing and mountain biking. The facility is also equipped with a labyrinth, several swimming pools and hot tubs, racquetball, billiards, ping pong, basketball and volleyball that are free to all spa guests. Further information regarding packages, treatments, medical testing, classes and activities can be found on the Green Valley Spa website at www.greenvalleyspa.com.

Flanigan’s Inn at Zion National Park is a mere 40 miles from St. George. Its stunning place, powerful programming and hill-top labyrinth make it a gargantuan leaping off point for a variety of Utah and Arizona desert destinations, including Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. More information on this rustic park lodge can be found at www.flanigans.com.

For more information on these facilities, day spas, independent practitioners and more check out
www.utahsdixie.com.

St. George is known for its rock climbing not only because of the beauty but because of the wealth of routes in the area. With well over a thousand named routes to be found in guidebooks, there is more than enough for beginners and veterans alike. For anyone new to climbing or current to the area, Paragon Climbing is known as the top professional climbing guide services in Southwest Utah. They have taken families with kids as young as 2 years venerable up to seniors 78 years young and have hosted climbers of all abilities from complete beginners to widely experienced, advanced climbers. Paragon also runs mountain bike tours. They provide bikes and all of the equipment as well as the transportation to and from your accommodations. Rides vary from desert to alpine trails, from novice to expert levels. Guided tours are designed to fit individual schedules and abilities. They can be reached at www.paragonclimbing.com.

St. George is one of the country’s premier hiking spots. Surrounded by the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, Snow Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, the set has a wide variety of terrain for all ability levels. Spas and outside companies provide a wide variety of guided hikes. These nature walks can be fitness hikes, moonlit walks or explorations of local archaeology, geology or flora and wild life.

Other activities include numerous golf courses, tennis, museums, factory outlet shopping, world-class dinning and a wide range of fitness classes. Look for details at www.utahstgeorge.com.

There are so many fitness classes available in St. George it is hard to know what to decide. With the wide variety you should be able to find something comparable to your typical work-out or find something new to try. The classes seem to be variations on the same themes and can be found as group sessions or in some cases private sessions. The classes tend to be signature versions of yoga, t’ai chi, Pilates, spinning, dance, weight training, aerobics, kickboxing and circuit training.

St. George seems to draw people with great knowledge about wellness, fitness and spirituality. Their knowledge has been tapped so that visitors may support from this vast reservoir. Lectures and life enrichment classes are available on a number of different specific topics. Cooking and nutrition as well as longevity, body structure, weight loss, detoxification and personal image classes are among the offerings for the physical body. For intellectual development, there are book discussions, art discussions, classes in archaeology and geology, pottery, herbs and the use of Global Positioning Systems. The spirit is honored with classes and discussions regarding the purpose of a labyrinth, how to meditate, Native American drumming, visualization, relaxation and spiritual energy.

In such a powerful atmosphere it seems natural to work on our own personal development through spiritual growth and discovery. Life coach Dr. Jane Miner, in association with Green Valley Spa, presents several personal development classes and is also available for private work (www.coachinginfo.com). When one is away from the stress of everyday life it is often a good time to explore values and the course life is taking. It is a chance to take stock of your life. The power of the state has been famous in the histories of the tribal occupants of the region. Non-denominational spiritual exploration has its roots in ancient indigenous cultures that predate most organized religions. Whether it is based in Native American or other cultures, it is very personal and can awaken areas of our minds and bodies for healing and well-being.

St. George is the perfect retreat for families and seniors and everyone in between. With its wealth of activities, body pampering spas and enriching classes you will return to your life feeling regenerated and centered.

Designed by some famous golfers, and top course designers, the courses offer some serious golf. In many respects, it makes for a good golf vacation destination.

To begin with, there is the West Course. Designed by Arnold Palmer, this is one of the most challenging in the Myrtle Beach area. The course is carved through majestic Carolina pine forests, and has numerous natural hazards in addition to fairway bunkers.

Alternatively, you could try the Nicklaus layout at Long Bay Club. This course has some advantageous holes, with holes 7,10,13 and 18 featured in the book The 100 Greatest holes along the Expansive Strand.’ It has formidable features, including a 137-slope rating and countless man-made mounds. The course also has bottomless bunkers scattered about, and some tricky par 3 holes. While the par 3 holes can be pretty they can also be very hard, like the 13th which has a green surrounded by water!

There are two Robert Trent Jones courses in the space. Waterway Hills Golf Club is one, featuring the Oak, Ravine and Lake Courses. These are classic Jones courses, featuring strategic landing areas, great bunkers and crowned greens. They are all 9-hole courses, set amid woodlands and lakes.

If looking for a more Scottish golf course, then you could try the Aberdeen Golf Club. This is one of the newest clubs in Myrtle Beach area. As the name suggests, the club has courses with a more Scottish feel. The nine-hole courses of the Meadows, Highlands and Woodlands keep to Scottish tradition and feature mounding, wide land areas and bent grass.

The North Course at the Myrtle Beach National is one of the most exciting in Myrtle Beach. Arnold Palmer and his design group have transformed the North Course into one of the best in America. Golf Digest ranked it in America’s top 10 new upscale courses, and it has been named South Carolina’s course of the year.

What makes it so special? It has some dramatic holes, like the 6th hole, which has an island fairway. The 12th hole has an island green, while hole 18 has over 40 sand traps guarding both sides of the fairway and a lake stretching out from it. Such holes make it perhaps the best course on the Grand Strand.

Of course, these are just a select handful of some of the more notable golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area. Overall, there are approximately 130 golf courses in the region for golfers to try their hand at. Myrtle Beach has golf courses featuring excellent develop creativity and scenary, with water hazards featuring prominantly. Certainly there is no lack of choice, and golfers of all levels should find something to cater for them in Myrtle Beach.
